The Charlotte-Mecklenburg area lags other metro areas in many key sustainability measures which serve as an indicator of a community's long-term economic, social, and environmental well-being. As the metro area continues to grow at a high rate, it is critical that efforts are made to raise awareness of the challenges the region will face now and into the future. 

Founded in 2010, Sustain Charlotte is a nonprofit organization helping to advance a region-wide sustainability movement by serving as a catalyst for change. Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.  In just short of a decade, Sustain Charlotte has become the metro area's leading voice for sustainability.

With a focus on three strategies to educate, engage and unite, Sustain Charlotte has launched a number of initiatives. The Bicycle Program promotes sustainable transportation infrastructure, with a focus on bicycling in the region. Similarly, Walk Your Neighborhood promotes walking as a form of transportation.  Sustainable Neighborhoods works with residents of motivated neighborhoods to set measurable sustainability goals and works to develop strategies and resources to meet them. The Transportation Choices Alliance works to increase transportation choices and their use throughout the Charlotte region. The Sustain Charlotte Awards recognize those in the community who are working toward the Charlotte 2030 Vision for Our Region. These are just a few of the many events, programs, public policy engagement, and other outreach efforts Sustain Charlotte manages.


Sustain Charlotte has grown rapidly over the last several years, growing its budget to allow for the addition of contractors, full-time and part-time staff, and a dynamic board of directors. As the organization has grown in scope, so too has the operations for the organization expanded in complexity. Sustain Charlotte is currently undertaking a strategic planning effort that will require a solid platform of operations upon which to build.

Sustain Charlotte is seeking a professional with a strong background in operations to coordinate human resources, office management/technology, financial management, and team communication. While this role begins as a part-time position (~25 hours per week), there is an opportunity for it to grow into a full-time position over time. Candidates with demonstrated operations expertise combined with a passion for sustainability are encouraged to apply to join this growing team.

Professional Responsibilities

The Operations Manager holds a pivotal internal-facing role with a primary focus on operational and administrative functions. Key responsibilities include:


  • Works with Executive Director to oversee implementation of Sustain Charlotte’s annual plan, scheduling quarterly reviews and assist in ensuring the organization meets its goals.
  • Provides regular support to Executive Director with board and committee meetings, taking minutes and issuing summary e-mails.
  • Manages nonprofit compliance issues including annual charitable solicitation license, insurance, audit, 990 tax return, board member conflict of interest forms and other tasks related to compliance.

Human Resources

  • Manages the human resource function for Sustain Charlotte’s hiring process and training of new employees.
  • Maintains staff records and supports the Executive Director in annual staff reviews and coordination of professional development.
  • Fosters a staff culture that supports the organization’s values.

Office Management/Technology

  • Oversees all office-related facility maintenance.
  • Ensures Sustain Charlotte’s technology systems (e-mail, site hosting, databases, etc.) are in good working order.
  • Makes regularly scheduled trips to the Sustain Charlotte mailbox, receiving and disseminating mail to staff recipients.

Financial Management

  • Oversees and maintains Sustain Charlotte’s daily financial procedures at the operational level and coordinates monthly processing with Sustain Charlotte’s bookkeeper.
  • Engages in quarterly financial and cash flow analysis in partnership with the Executive Director, assessing forward progress against the annual budget.

Team Communication

  • Coordinates agenda for weekly staff meetings and works with team members to identify topics for discussion.
  • Facilitates staff communication through weekly/regular updates.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

The ideal candidate would have the following capabilities and qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field or a certificate in nonprofit management along with equivalent education and experience.
  • An appreciation for sustainability and demonstrated commitment to it
  • At least three years’ experience direct supervisory experience in management and operations.
  • Ability to make connections easily and create authentic relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups
  • Solid analytical skills and a basic understanding of financial levers
  • Proficiency with CRM management is essential


Compensation for this part-time, exempt position will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
