We'd like to welcome our two new summer interns to the Sustain Charlotte team! Take a minute to get to know Claire Miller and Henry Smith. We're so glad they're bringing their tremendous skills to our work.

My love for the environment started with spending time in nature hiking, swimming, and observing wildlife. At Middlebury, I have continued to develop this love into a more nuanced understanding of the human relationship with the environment. One of my favorite classes so far has been Anthropology and Climate Change, a class which highlighted the ways that structural inequality and environmental issues are intrinsically linked together.
I wanted to work with Sustain Charlotte this summer because smart growth is a forward-thinking solution that promotes community development and environmental health. During my freshman year of high school, my class participated in a walkability audit with Sustain Charlotte on Statesville Avenue. This was my first exposure to the organization, and I was introduced to a fundamental pillar of smart growth: safe transportation options. Since then, I have remained very interested in the work that this organization does to make Charlotte a more sustainable city.
This summer, I am working on a variety of communications projects like preparing the new website as well as helping organize the donation records.

My name is Henry Smith and I have just completed my third year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, pursuing a joint honors degree in sustainable development and management. Throughout my academic career, I have acquired knowledge and skills related to sustainable development, including environmental policy, renewable energy, conservation biology, and natural resource management.
As a student studying environmental science with a passion for sustainability and conservation, I am excited about the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of sustainable development through sustain charlotte. This summer I will be mapping the greenways as to provide a helpful tool to allow more people to enjoy one of the cities biggest assets.
I am excited to be outdoors this summer as some of my favorite hobbies include skiing, hiking, running and biking.
As a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual, I am eager to contribute to Sustain Charlotte’s efforts towards sustainable development.
