Marketing and Communications Internship


Sustain Charlotte is looking for a qualified Marketing and Communications Intern to join our marketing team at our office for 10 per week between August 29, 2016 and January 6, 2017 (dates somewhat flexible). The intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of nonprofit marketing and communications. The intern will report directly to the Communications + Development Director, but will also coordinate efforts with the Executive Director and other staff, as appropriate. The intern must be available to come into our office at least two days per week, for a minimum of 4hrs each day.

Intern will receive a $1,000 stipend upon completing the internship. The intern will receive valuable hands-on training and mentorship in nonprofit marketing and communications at a respected and growing organization. We are happy to help coordinate college course credit for this internship if the candidate desires. A computer and work space will be provided for the intern’s use. We encourage our team to commute sustainably! Our office is easily accessible by CATS bus or light rail and is in the heart of Uptown Charlotte’s business district for easy access by bike or on foot.

Responsibilities and Learnings

  • Conduct web, email and social media analysis, reporting and monitoring

  • Research, monitor and report daily pertinent industry trends and opportunities to team

  • Analyse and report on survey results

  • Record video for use as digital marketing content

  • Prepare reports on research and findings related to marketing trends; measure performance against goals

  • Create digital marketing content especially related to events promotion

  • Conduct donor research and outreach, including face-to-face interviews

  • Research new ways to grow and maintain Sustain Charlotte’s local and national media database


  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • A passion for digital marketing, analytics and great enthusiasm to learn

  • Experience with marketing analytics projects a plus

  • Experience with social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook)

  • Experience with video recording and editing (using smart phone or other)

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and follow- up skills

  • Graphic design skills a plus

  • Proactive problem prevention and issue resolution leadership ability

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, social media analytics and insights, Google Analytics and ability to learn other software programs

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
