Each year we honor local sustainability leaders who are leading the way for a more sustainable future through their work. At this year's Charlotte Sustainability Awards presented by Duke Energy, we honored over 40 incredible nominees at our 2021 virtual event on the evening of April 22nd.
Of those nominees, six were selected by our independent panel of judges as winners, and were presented with beautifully handcrafted custom awards (donated by Carolina Urban Lumber). We also honored the two winners of the 2020 Recycling Excellence award. The day was extra meaningful because it was also Earth Day!
This event wasn't another Zoom meeting! We used the interactive platform Remo to simulate the experience of being in a ballroom. At tables with fun names like "We love bikes" and "More trees, please", attendees met each other and networked in small groups at the beginning of the event and during a break in the presentation. We even had a virtual elevator so guests could mingle on two floors of our event space.
Over 100 people joined us for the event to celebrate these incredible smart growth leaders and support Sustain Charlotte. Brad Panovich, Chief Meteorologist at WCNC, acted as emcee for the night.
The awards program kicked off with a video from Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who spoke about the importance of Charlotte leading on sustainability issues. A highlight of the evening was the hearing from our supporters and community partners as they shared their perspectives on why they value the work that Sustain Charlotte is doing to live out its mission in our community.
Attendees also enjoyed a fun live raffle drawing for 12 awesome prize packages donated by generous in-kind sponsors. We're thrilled to announce that the event raised over $11,000 to advance Sustain Charlotte’s mission, thanks to the generosity of our attendees, sponsors, in-kind donors, and everyone who helped make the event a success.
