Building connectivity back into Charlotte's disconnected neighborhoods
gridstreets_2.jpeg

You don't have to look at a map of the Charlotte area for long to figure out which neighborhoods were built before and after the time that cars became popular. As the grid-based blocks of the 19th and early 20th centuries gave way to cul-de-sacs beginning in the 1950s, we lost the foundation of vibrant neighborhoods. We lost our connectivity.

At Monday's meeting of the City Council Transportation and Planning committee, staff from the Charlotte Department of Transportation and Planning Department told the story of how Charlotte lost its connected street network and how we're working to rebuild it.

Read our blog to learn more!

Wouldn't you rather be reading a book, catching a breeze, or chatting with friends than stuck in traffic?

How Charlotte’s Knight Cities Challenge Winners Will Make the Queen City a Better Place to Live [Charlotte Agenda]

"Two Charlotteans were announced today as the winners of the Knight Cities Challenge. The challenge is a competition of ideas in which the Knight Foundation chooses innovative projects that will make the 26 communities that the Knight Foundation sponsors a better place to live and work." Congratulations to our local Knight Foundation Knight Cities Challenge winners Erin Gillespie and Varian Shrum on their selected projects to bring life to an under-loved part of the Rail Trail and engage young people in civic life!

We Share the blame with Trump on Climate Change [The Charlotte Observer]

"Resistance to Trump ignores our own complicity in the climate change conundrum. It’s been 45 years since Earth Day, but we have yet to come to terms with the choices we make on a habitual basis and how these configure our carbon footprint. We need to ask why we behave the way we do." Sustain Charlotte member Martin Zimmerman suggests simple ways that we can all reduce our contribution to climate change.

298 US Climate Mayors Commit to Adopt, Honor and Uphold Paris Climate Agreement Goals
