Sustain Charlotte Announces Winners of 2017 Awards

CHARLOTTE, NC –Sustain Charlotte, a local nonprofit dedicated to educating, engaging and uniting citizens to solve Charlotte’s sustainability challenges, recognized 58 area citizens and organizations for their innovative work to address the region’s environmental, economic, and equity challenges. Awards were presented to 9 winners before a crowd of 300 at the 2017Sustain Charlotte Awards Celebration on Wednesday April 26th at LaCa Projects in Wesley Heights.

Local nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses were recognized for helping to advance Charlotte 2030:  A Sustainable Vision for Our Region, which Sustain Charlotte launched in 2010.

Sustain Charlotte Founder and Executive Director Shannon Binns welcomed the audience saying, “This year marks our sixth awards, and what makes this event unique is that it affords us the opportunity to recognize leaders in our community who are largely working behind-the-scenes, unnoticed, to positively shape the future of our region.”

Awards were presented to one organization in each of eight categories: Land Use, Sustainable Economy, Energy, Food, Waste Reduction, Social Equity, Transportation, and Water. Also, one individual was recognized as an Outstanding Leader. This year’s winners are:

Sam Perkins (Outstanding Sustainability Leader Award)

O2 emc (Energy Award)

Insight Architects (Social Equity Award)

West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition (Food Award)

Town of Davidson (Land Use Award)

Free Range Brewing (Sustainable Economy Award)

Trips for Kids Charlotte/Charlotte Re-Cyclery (Transportation Award)

Leaf Burrito (Waste Reduction Award)

The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and College of Arts & Architecture (Water Award)
