Thanks to our generous supporters, we started off the new year with a bang! We not only reached our end-of-year goal to raise $15,000 but exceeded it! We raised $17,776!
Now, we are so excited to make a BIG impact in 2017! Below are 10 ways we will further our mission in the new year:
-
Inspire area residents to replace one million miles of single occupancy vehicle trips with a sustainable mode of transportation through our Way2Go initiative.
-
Through our Walk2Transit initiative, identify ten local bus stops in need of walkability improvements and advocate for investments to make them safer and more accessible for pedestrians.
- Grow the Transportation Choices Alliance as a community hub for information-sharing and collaborative work among organizations and individuals working toward a sustainable transportation network.
-
Advocate and engage citizens in the City's efforts to improve the efficiency of the bus network via Envision My Ride and create an ambitious new regional transit plan.
-
Grow our broad and diverse coalition of citizens (#iBikeCLT) who support a connected network of safe bicycle facilities, so that residents of all ages and abilities can use a bicycle as transportation.
-
Inform and engage local residents in opportunities to help shape the policies that regulate development as the City updates its zoning ordinance.
-
Monitor local land use plans and rezoning requests, and engage the public when critical sustainable land use opportunities and threats emerge.
-
Partner with the Lincoln Heights neighborhood and the West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition to achieve sustainability goals set by residents.
-
Host three amazing community events: Walk Your Neighborhood (March), Sustain Charlotte Awards Celebration (April), and Biketoberfest (October).
-
Continue to help the Charlotte region become a national model for sustainable development!
YOU can help make all of this and more possible! Resolve to get involved in the community this year by signing up to volunteer, supporting us through membership or encouraging your employer to join the Sustain Charlotte Partner Network!
We look forward to working with you to make a difference in 2017!

New CDOT study shows Charlotteans want transportation choices!
It's that time we've all been waiting for: the release of CDOT's biennial 2016 Transportation Survey! 406 residents were asked their opinions on driving conditions, possible solutions and funding sources, priorities, safety, and travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
Here are some highlights:
- 86% want to see roads designed for everyone, not just those who drive cars.
- 79% think the city or state should provide alternative modes of transportation to ease congestion.
- 63.5% would like to drive less in Charlotte.

We invite you to our Sustain Charlotte Community Corps (SCCC) 2017 kick off meeting! We'll discuss our strategy for partnering with the Lincoln Heights neighborhood in support of their 2017 sustainability goals, as well as leadership opportunities in communications, volunteer coordination, and coordination of the neighborhood's three sustainability initiatives.
We'll have a sign on our table so you can easily find us. If you're interested in volunteering with the SCCC but can't attend this meeting, e-mail Danielle Turek at [email protected].
The Development Projects that Matter in 2017 [Charlotte Agenda]
"Looking into 2017, there are some absolutely incredible construction projects in Charlotte that will begin, continue or complete by the end of the year." Click here to see what they are! We're excited to see that mixed-use, walkable development is a popular development trend for 2017! Yet we're concerned that our growing lack of affordable housing in the areas experiencing growth will perpetuate Charlotte's patterns of racial and economic segregation.
Winter 2017: Walkable Neighborhoods Report [REALTORS & Smart Growth]
Whether it comes from formal research or simple observation, the evidence keeps piling up. Lots of people want to live and work where they can walk more and drive less. An analysis of the 30 largest U.S. metropolitan areas found that walkable urban locations within each metro have outperformed sprawling suburban locations over the last five years in the office, rental, and multi-family rental markets."
