Enlisting Bikes In the Fight Against Inequality [CityLab]
"We try to remind people that we know that commute time is one of the most significant indicators of someone's ability to move out of poverty. And we know that some of Baltimore's most vulnerable neighborhoods have some of the longest commute times. They are in the city but they can't get to jobs or amenities like healthcare and schools and groceries without being on the bus for an hour." Better, safer bicycle infrastructure can become a powerful tool for improving social and economic equity in Charlotte. Will we invest in a network that serves all people?
New Entertainment Venue Approved for South End Industrial Buildings [The Charlotte Observer]
"Charlotte City Council voted to approve a redevelopment that will bring new entertainment and dining options to a set of industrial buildings on the edge of booming South End. The vote in favor of the plan was unanimous, in spite of misgivings by Charlotte planning staff about the site’s road infrastructure and connectivity." Planning staff didn't lend their support to the plan because it didn't include the requested street connection that "would allow for vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian mobility through an area that is converting existing warehouse uses to an entertainment district...The connection would support the City’s policy goal of increased connectivity and a denser street network in transit station areas.” We are disappointed that Charlotte City Council approved this plan despite concerns about connectivity. Accessibility for people traveling by ALL modes is essential if we really want to create vibrant urban activity centers!
