Seattle Climbs but Austin Sprawls: The Myth of the Return to Cities [NY Times]
"Be skeptical when you hear about the return to glory of the American city — that idealized vision of rising skyscrapers and bustling, dense downtowns. Contrary to perception, the nation is continuing to become more suburban, and at an accelerating pace. The prevailing pattern is growing out, not up, although with notable exceptions." The good news is that Charlotte's is one of these exceptions! Read the NY Times article about which cities continue to sprawl and which are becoming more compact. Our average neighborhood density increased by 0.5% between 2010 and 2016. But as one of the fastest-growing large U.S. cities, we still lag far behind Seattle, where the density increased by 3% over the same time period. We're hopeful that Charlotte's commitment to creating a new Unified Development Ordinance and supporting transportation choices will lead to a more vibrant city!
It’s Insane to Keep Building Huge Parking Decks Along the Light Rail Line
As Charlotte's traffic congestion grows, more attention is being paid to the amount and locations of parking spaces being built. Mary Newsom explores how Charlotte's past decades of sprawling development have led to many parts of town being unreachable without a car, and how parking garages could be better designed to transition to different uses in a less car-dependent future. Read more at The Naked City blog. We agree with South End resident Philip Sanford who argues for a reduction in parking spaces for Charlotte's densest neighborhoods that are well-served by transit in this Charlotte Five article. Less parking would also allow tenants to save money on rent by reducing the high cost of parking that is currently built into their rents, supports the use of sustainable transportation, and allows more human-scaled development to be built.
