Can Vision Zero reverse Charlotte's rapidly rising traffic crash fatality rate?

crashes_2012-2016.jpeg

At Monday’s City Council Transportation and Planning Committee meeting, we heard unsettling news about a steady upward trend in traffic fatalities on Charlotte streets. But we also heard the official start of a conversation about how to reverse that trend and eliminate future fatalities and serious injuries through implementing Vision Zero.

There’s been an upward trend of traffic crashes in Charlotte since 2012, with an average of 48 people killed every year between 2012 - 2016. Last year, our city recorded more than 30,000 crashes. That’s the highest recorded number here ever.

Vision Zero is a concept that originated in Sweden and is sweeping the globe. The core principle is: In every situation a person might fail - the road system should not.

Thanks to all who joined us to celebrate sustainable and equitable transportation in Charlotte last weekend!

OpenStrees_littlegirlonPBLdemo.jpg

This past Saturday, 60+ Charlotte-area residents joined us for our Art for All | Bikes for All bike ride that showcased the newest Inside|Out art installations along the Stewart and Irwin Creek Greenways!

Then, on Sunday, we joined thousands of people at Open Streets 704! We partnered with CDOT to distribute intercept surveys to riders as they came down the protected bike lane demo on The Plaza!  This valuable information will help CDOT decide if this project will move from demo to pilot to permanent!

Join us on May 20th to enjoy great food, great music and plenty of fun for the whole family -- all while supporting Sustain Charlotte!

We need LOTS of volunteers for #WalkCLT 2017 in FreeMoreWest!

Using pedestrian wayfinding signs, #WalkCLT aims to raise awareness of the role that walking can play as a mode of transportation and the many social, environmental, and economic benefits that walking generates for ourselves and our community!

On June 2, we're bringing this initiative to FreeMoreWest with an exciting launch event and we want YOU to be a part of it!

You can join this fun community initiative by 1) Helping to distribute flyers in the area (5/23), 2) Joining our Ninja Sign Team and helping to place exciting new pedestrian wayfinding signs (5/30, 6/1) OR 3) Helping with day-of-event preparations (6/2).

Click here for details and to sign up for a shift! Feel free to invite friends, family and/or co-workers to join you (just make sure they sign up as well)!

All volunteers will receive an event t-shirt and wristband to participate in the event!

Charlotte’s Light Rail Was Supposed to Change our Attitude About Cars. It Hasn’t. [The Charlotte Observer]

“Those [developments near mass transit] are the best opportunities we have right now to build less parking,” Shannon Binns, head of Sustain Charlotte, said of the sites developers have been buying up for top dollar next to the light rail. The $1.2 billion Blue Line extension from uptown to UNC Charlotte is set to open by March of next year. “When we don’t maximize the land use around the transit investments, we really are undermining those investments.”

How Does Charlotte Grow? 3 Developers Talk About the Future of the City [CharlotteFive]

"So what does not boring look like? Apartments that are more than places to sleep at night. An emphasis on experience: Are there interesting places to eat and drink nearby? Is there wifi everywhere? Are the living spaces beautiful?" Great communities include places for people to connect, relax, and play. We love to see developments and neighborhoods support not just amazing places for their own residents, but for ALL in the public!

Every U.S. County Has an Affordable Housing Crisis [CityLab]

"The affordable housing crisis has spared no county—rural or urban. From small towns like Traverse City, Michigan, to big expensive cities like San Francisco, a cheap and decent place to live is hard to come by. And it would be even harder without government support, according to a new report by the Urban Institute." Lack of affordable housing is a nationwide problem, but it's especially acute in our area. For very low income families, Mecklenburg ranks far below average in availability of affordable housing.
