Event Planning Internship


Sustain Charlotte is looking for a qualified intern to assist with our fall event planning (primarily Walk Your Neighborhood and Biketoberfest). This intern will join our marketing team for 10 hours per week between August 29, 2016 and January 6, 2017 (dates somewhat flexible). We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of inspiring choices that lead to a healthier and more vibrant community for generations to come. The intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of nonprofit event planning. The intern will report directly to the Communications + Development Director, but will also coordinate efforts with the Executive Director and other staff, as appropriate. The intern must be available to come into our office at least two days per week, for a minimum of 4hrs each day.

Intern will receive a $1,000 stipend upon completing the internship. The intern will receive valuable hands-on training and mentorship in nonprofit event planning at a respected and growing organization. We are happy to help coordinate college course credit for this internship if the candidate desires. A computer and work space will be provided for the intern’s use. We encourage our team to commute sustainably! Our office is easily accessible by CATS bus or light rail and is in the heart of Uptown Charlotte’s business district for easy access by bike or on foot.

Responsibilities and Learnings

  • Research potential business participations and community partners, especially for Walk Your Neighborhood Event

  • Conduct outreach to potential business partners, neighborhood leaders, and Sustain Charlotte volunteers, especially for Walk Your Neighborhood Event

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of meetings

  • Create and post event marketing content to various online channels

  • Monitor and track social media and press coverage related to events

  • Assist in the planning of pre-event and day-of-event logistics

  • Prepare and monitor post-event surveys

  • Assist with other event-related tasks as needed

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required


  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • A passion for events planning, community outreach and great enthusiasm to learn

  • Experience with events planning a plus

  • Experience with GIS mapping a plus

  • Experience with social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook)

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and follow- up skills

  • Graphic design skills a plus

  • Proactive problem prevention and issue resolution leadership ability

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, Google Maps, and ability to learn other software programs

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
