City Council to soon hear from the public on key transportation plans!

SideWalkNEEDS.jpeg
Missing and inadequate sidewalks abound in Charlotte. (from p.13 of Charlotte WALKS plan)

Mark your calendar for the evening of Monday, January 23! That's when you'll have a chance to tell Charlotte City Council your thoughts on the updated draft Transportation Action Plan (TAP) and the first ever Charlotte WALKS pedestrian plan.

At their December 12 meeting, Council's Transportation and Planning committee voted unanimously to recommend the TAP and Charlotte WALKS to the full Council for public comment. This means YOU will be able to let your elected officials know that you support investment in Charlotte's future!

Take a survey to help the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) improve our bus system!

Envision My Ride is a new initiative to redesign the current bus system in Charlotte. Through this initiative, CATS plans to study bus route structure and frequency to determine how to improve the system and better serve the Charlotte region.

Over the next twelve months, CATS will conduct extensive public outreach to best understand what is most important to riders. CATS will use this feedback to develop a plan for route and service adjustments!

Tips for Sustainable Giving [Eartheasy.com]

"Here are some ideas for giving without taking from the planet. It's the thought that counts and the personal touch makes any gift more meaningful and memorable. With a little planning, you can give more while spending less!" We encourage you to be creative with your gifts this season and gift the gift of sustainability! Click here to learn some great sustainable gift ideas.

CATS Wants a Rail Line to Airport. A $1.5 Million Study Will Determine the Best Way. [The Charlotte Observer]

"The Charlotte Area Transit System is continuing its ambitious plans for more rail lines, and expects to spend up to $1.5 million on a consultant to determine how and where it should build a line to serve west Charlotte and the airport... 'This is not just a study to put on the shelf,' [Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) CEO] Lewis said. 'My ultimate goal is I want to build these lines.' Charlotte needs to be investing in major transit expansion now to avoid congestion as 400,000 people move here in the next 25 years. We're optimistic we can build out our regional transit plan faster than expected!

Bike-share and Other Changes Arriving with Light Rail to UNCC [Plan Charlotte]

"Along with a new light rail station on the UNC Charlotte campus, the Blue Line Extension will mean transportation changes on- and off-campus – in parking patterns, bus routes and campus shuttles – and the debut of a bike-share program...Because UNC Charlotte was built in an era when virtually all development in the U.S. focused on cars, University City neighborhoods surrounding the campus lack strong pedestrian and bicycle amenities...But as the light rail line is being built, the city of Charlotte is adding or improving sidewalks and pedestrian crossings and adding bicycle lanes around the station areas." We're thrilled about these changes coming to UNC Charlotte that will mean easier access by transit and a more bikeable campus!

Matters of Life and Breath in Northwest Charlotte: Communities Unite for Air Quality Studies [The Charlotte Post]

"Northwest Charlotte has an air quality problem. Clean Air Carolina is collaborating with communities and larger organizations, such as Aclima and the Environmental Protection Agency, to monitor and improve air quality in vulnerable neighborhoods, especially those near major roadways. Northwest Charlotte is bordered by Interstate 85 and I-77." As this article points out, some Charlotte neighborhoods are suffering more than others from pollution caused by our car-dependent travel. We work hard every day to improve biking, walking and transit options for Charlotte so that ALL Charlotteans can breathe cleaner air and live in healthy, vibrant neighborhoods.
