Charlotte Roads Are a Threat to Public Safety [The Charlotte Observer]

"Last month’s death of a Charlotte woman in a head-on collision on Monroe Road highlights a significant public safety threat along many Charlotte thoroughfares where the density of development and traffic overwhelm outdated road design and traffic management." We no longer can afford to have them serve as only a way to move the largest number of cars at the highest possible speed. As population growth and traffic congestion increase in Charlotte, it's time to take a hard look at the design of roads, and whether they're meeting the needs of all people. Then we need to be courageous enough to make some changes.

Follow the Cross Charlotte Trail Across this Map [PlanCharlotte]

"The 30-mile Cross Charlotte Trail through Mecklenburg County and Charlotte, when finished, will offer a transportation corridor that will allow users to bicycle or walk from one end of the county to the other, connecting spots such as Pineville, Freedom Park, Uptown, NoDa, Hidden Valley and UNC Charlotte." Check out the interactive map for details and to see its planned route!

Eight Cities Rolling Out Streetcar Projects [Planetizen]

"After a hiatus of many decades, streetcars are experiencing a resurgence, and not just in the Pacific Northwest. Jon Banister writes, 'Streetcars, often slow-moving trollies that share lanes with traffic, are more about spurring development in new parts of the city than providing the fastest transportation option.' Eight more cities are aiming to break ground by 2020, with some lines set for completion well before then." We’re excited that construction is moving along for Phase 2 of the CityLYNX Gold Line, which extends the current streetcar segment by 2.5 miles on the east and west ends of the line, adds 11 stops, and replaces the current vintage trolleys with modern streetcar vehicles with hybrid technology!
