May 18 Weekly Brief!

Next Monday, City Council will vote on Charlotte BIKES, CDOT’s plan over the next five years to work toward making it safer for people of all ages and abilities to use a bicycle for transportation, fun, and fitness. We have worked closely with CDOT on strengthening the draft bike plan during the public input period, and now we need YOU to voice your support

To ensure this plan is approved, City Council needs to hear from you! Be sure and tell them you not only support Charlotte BIKES, but that you also want to see it funded immediately.  (Read the reasons why we support Charlotte BIKES.)

National_Bike_to_Work_Day.png

This national event encourages more folks to give biking a try and see how stress-free your commute can be without getting stuck in traffic! Be sure to log your trip via Way2Go.com for a chance to win prizes and help meet the goal of driving a million fewer miles in Charlotte by October!

How easy is it to ride the bus along 7th St or South Tryon?

STryon_crossing.jpg

Building on an illuminating first Walk2Transit audit on South Boulevard, last week we were joined by volunteers to check out conditions for transit riders on South Tryon Street and 7th Street.

As we examine different locations around the city, we’re finding familiar barriers faced by people who need to walk to bus stops.

Read our blog post to hear what our volunteers shared at the end of our South Tryon tour!

Charlotte has the worst traffic congestion in the state. With 44 people per day moving to town, traffic just keeps getting worse. Can our infrastructure keep up or is permanent gridlock in our future?

Sustain Charlotte's Director will be one of the guests on WFAE's Charlotte Talks this coming Tuesday (5/23) at 9am to talk about transportation and traffic in Charlotte! Mark your calendar now and be sure to tune in!

Join us this Saturday to enjoy great food, great music, and plenty of fun for the whole family – even the four-legged members!

We (still) need LOTS of volunteers for #WalkCLT 2017 in FreeMoreWest!

Using pedestrian wayfinding signs, #WalkCLT aims to raise awareness of the role that walking can play as a mode of transportation and the many social, environmental, and economic benefits that walking generates for ourselves and our community!

On June 2, we're bringing this initiative to FreeMoreWest with an exciting launch event and we want YOU to be a part of it!

You can help us make this fun community initiative a success by 1) Helping to distribute flyers in the area (5/23), 2) Joining our Ninja Sign Team and helping to place exciting new pedestrian wayfinding signs (5/30, 6/1) OR 3) Helping with day-of-event preparations (6/2).

Click here for details and to sign up for a shift! Feel free to invite friends, family and/or co-workers to join you (just make sure they sign up as well)!

All volunteers will receive an event t-shirt and wristband to participate in the event!

The Poor Often Get Shafted by Development in Charlotte. Can Government Fix That? [The Charlotte Observer]

“It’s getting so cost-prohibitive to live in these vibrant parts of the city,” said Mumford. “If we continue on this trajectory of pricing people out, this city will look a lot different than we want it to.” Charlotte needs to do a better job of balancing economic growth and protecting social equity for our most vulnerable residents when they're being displaced from their neighborhoods. There's a growing shortage of affordable housing within reasonable proximity to jobs, transit, and daily destinations. That's costly to everyone in the long run.

Here’s How Much Time Charlotte Drivers Waste in Traffic. (It’s Worse than We Thought.) [The Charlotte Observer]

"No drivers in the state waste more time in traffic than the ones in the Charlotte area, who lose 40 hours a year due to congestion." What else could you be doing with an extra 40 hours per year? Area residents urgently need practical, safe, and affordable alternatives to driving alone!
